Graham

As the years mature, sadly, the musical sophistication doesn’t and, as blokes passing 40 would normally be expected to be discovering Pink Floyd and Rush, Graham’s CD collection grows through the latest Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium and Savatage offerings.

Graham’s first guitar was purchased in South Africa over 30 years ago and hard rock is all he has played ever since. It was a 30 rand strat copy which had its own seat on the 747 back home. No boring lessons or gradings involved in Graham’s musical development - “Hey, if the Beatles were millionaires before they learned to read music then bollocks to theory” seems to be his motto. If it sounds good then it won’t sound better just because it’s been converted to dots on a stave.

Bands and gigs soon followed and Graham’s live playing experience now goes back over twenty years to his teens with gigs numbered in their hundreds. Greatest rock ‘n’ roll moment – passing Phil Lynott and John Sykes coming the other way on the Kings Road, London on a school field trip to the stock exchange. “My jaw dropped and I remember them looking back at me.

They must have been thinking “well, are you gonna say somethin’ or what?” but I was too starstruck”. I had already bought all the Thin Lizzy albums by then and was torn between shooting into HMV to buy another version of Thunder and Lightning and get them to sign it or holding onto my meagre cash savings. In the end I bottled it and Phil was dead within three years.

Oh, If I had my time again...
